If you’ve ever received a DTF transfer that looked blurry, pixelated, or just not as sharp as you expected, there’s a good chance the problem started with resolution. Specifically, the file wasn’t set to 300 DPI.

Resolution is one of those things that’s easy to overlook — especially if your design looks perfectly sharp on your computer screen. But screen quality and print quality are two very different things. A file that looks great at 72 DPI on a monitor can look terrible when it’s printed on a shirt at full size.

What Is DPI?

DPI stands for dots per inch. It describes how many individual ink dots a printer places within one inch of space. The more dots per inch, the more detail and sharpness in the final print.

Think of it like a mosaic. A mosaic made of tiny tiles looks smooth and detailed from a distance. A mosaic made of large tiles looks blocky and rough. DPI works the same way — more dots means finer detail, smoother edges, and sharper text.

When people talk about image resolution in design software, they’re usually referring to PPI (pixels per inch). For practical purposes, PPI and DPI mean the same thing when preparing artwork for printing. Set your file to 300 PPI in Photoshop and it will print at 300 DPI.

Why 300 DPI Is the Standard for DTF Printing

300 DPI is the industry standard for high-quality printing — not just for DTF, but for most professional print applications including business cards, posters, and apparel decoration.

At 300 DPI, the human eye can’t distinguish individual dots at a normal viewing distance. The result looks smooth, sharp, and professional. Text is crisp. Edges are clean. Fine details hold up.

Below 300 DPI, quality starts to drop noticeably:

  • 200 DPI — Acceptable for very large prints viewed from a distance, but not ideal for garments
  • 150 DPI — Visibly soft. Fine details and text start to look fuzzy
  • 72 DPI — Screen resolution. Looks sharp on a monitor but prints blurry and pixelated

The Most Important Rule: DPI at the Actual Print Size

Here’s where a lot of people get confused: DPI only matters at the size you’re actually printing.

A file that’s 300 DPI at 2 inches wide is not the same as a file that’s 300 DPI at 12 inches wide. If you take that small 2-inch file and scale it up to 12 inches, the resolution drops dramatically — and your print will look blurry.

Design your artwork at the exact size you want it printed, at 300 DPI. For example:

  • Want a 10” × 10” chest print? Set your canvas to 10” × 10” at 300 DPI.
  • Want a 4” × 4” left chest logo? Set your canvas to 4” × 4” at 300 DPI.
  • Want a 12” × 14” full back design? Set your canvas to 12” × 14” at 300 DPI.

Don’t design small and scale up. Don’t design at 72 DPI and change the number to 300 without resampling. Neither approach adds real detail.

How to Check Your File’s Resolution

In Adobe Photoshop

  1. Open your file in Photoshop.
  2. Go to Image → Image Size.
  3. Look at the Resolution field. It should say 300 Pixels/Inch or higher.
  4. Also check the Width and Height fields to confirm they match your intended print size.
  5. Make sure Resample is unchecked if you’re just checking — you don’t want to accidentally change the file.

In Adobe Illustrator

Illustrator is a vector program, so resolution works differently. Vector artwork scales to any size without losing quality — so resolution isn’t a concern for pure vector files. This is one of the reasons AI and SVG are excellent file formats for DTF printing.

However, if your Illustrator file contains raster elements (like embedded photos or textures), those elements need to be at 300 DPI. Click on the raster element, go to Window → Document Info, and check the resolution of the selected object.

In Canva

Canva doesn’t show DPI settings directly in the editor. When you download, choose PNG and select the highest quality option available. Canva exports at 96 DPI by default for free accounts. Canva Pro allows higher resolution exports. If you’re using the free plan, your file may not meet the 300 DPI requirement — especially for larger designs. For best results, use Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator for print-ready artwork.
